and Beginning
in Northamptonshire, close to the source of the Great River Ouse, this
section of the walk takes you into the rolling countryside of
Buckinghamshire and then into Milton Keynes – no concrete cows on this
walk, though, only real ones! Your first encounter with the River Ouse
is just a short walk away from the starting point outside the King’s
Head Pub in Syresham, Northamptonshire after which the walk takes you
through some pleasant, wooded, rolling countryside, soon crossing the
border into Buckinghamshire and eventually passing through the stunning
Stowe Estate with its 18th century temples, monuments and landscapes
designed by Capability Brown.
After walking through the centre of the historic town of Buckingham,
The Ouse Valley Way then takes you along the Old Stratford and
Buckingham Arms of the Grand Union Canal, before arriving at the
peaceful and picturesque Ouse Valley Park on the outskirts of the old
coaching town of Stony Stratford. From here, you’ll be following the
river bank for most of the way, as the walk first cuts underneath the
early 19th century Iron Trunk Aqueduct which carries The Grand Union
Canal and its narrow boats high above your head, then, once past the
Victorian railway-workers’ houses of New Bradwell, joins the towpath of
the Canal itself before diverting away across farmland, woods and a
huge area of common land on the outskirts of the fascinating old town
of Newport Pagnell.
