View from this walkSTRETHAM (OLD ENGINE)TO ELY (THE MALTINGS/WATERFRONT)

After you’ve passed Stretham Old Engine, continue (in a northerly direction) along the southern floodbank. After about half a mile you come to the A1123. This is a very fast road and visibility is not good at the point where the path meets the road, so after crossing the stile, turn left and walk back to the middle of the roadbridge, cross here, then turn right, walk back down the road, step over the crash barrier and re-join the footpath.

Continue along the south bank of the river, with Ely Cathedral now visible diagonally ahead of you (the spire of Stretham church is on your left) and after about another mile, cross the railway line and continue towards the West River Bridge at the Fish and Duck pub and marina.

This is known as Pope's Corner and at this point the River Cam (flowing in from your right) meets the Ouse and the Ouse Valley Way meets the Fen Rivers Way. Cross the bridge and turn right to continue your walk along the north bank of the Ouse. The river is now on your right and the railway line on your left. Ely Cathedral continues to dominate the skyline ahead of you.

After about 1 mile/1.6 km, you pass a couple of seats at Little Thetford Mooring which make a good place for a coffe/sandwich stop. Continue along the flood bank, passing Thetford Fen Pumping Station on the other bank. About 1 mile/1.6 km further on,, the floodbank is broken by Braham Dock (Drain) and, despite the OS map indicating the route goes straight across, there is no bridge here. Instead, you have to turn left to walk towards the railway line along the drain bank, then, just before the railway line, turn right, crossing two stiles onto the opposite bank, turn right again and walk back down the side of the drain to re-join the flood bank on the other side of Braham Dock. Cross the stile and turn left to continue your walk towards Ely.

About 0.5 mile/0.8 km further on, cross the railway line and continue towards Ely Station and City Centre. After passing the station to your left, the path meets the A142. Turn right and walk along the road towards the middle of the bridge where there is better visibility. Cross here and go through the gap in the crash barriers to re-join the footpath. (For Ely Station, turn left along the A142 and then left again into the station).

Follow the hard-surface path which leads behind some houses and along Ely’s attractive and busy waterfront with its boats, pubs and shops. Pass The Maltings and continue along The Ouse Valley Way/Fen Rivers Way towards Littleport.(Refreshments are available at The Maltings and there are public toilets in the Long Stay Car Park nearby. To find them, turn left past the Maltings then follow the car park sign to your right and the toilets are straight ahead of you in the car park)
